WORKS
Sam Evans is a visual artist who explores ancient myths and untold stories. She was born in 1995 in a small town in Germany, spent most of her time in nature and discovered her fascination for legends, folklore and the unknown at an early age. It is important to her to understand what is going on inside people and what lies behind their emotions. She studied Fine Arts and Art Education at HBK Braunschweig (Germany) and Kyoto Seika University (Japan). She graduated in 2023 in both subjects and completed her master's degree in 2024 in Corinna Schnitt's class, specialising in photography and video art.
In her photography, she places the body and nature in relation to each other. She deals with artefacts, rituals, memories, imaginary constructs and the environment. Cycles, protective mechanisms, human rawness and the significance of places play a central role in her work. In the works, the relationship to the human approach to identity and diversity is translated into the language of the biological diversity of flora and fauna. Of particular importance are not only humankind's interaction with nature, but also queerness and neurodiversity.
Through planning and staging, the images are intended to appear abstruse and otherworldly as well as authentic. In order to expand the concept of photography, she experiments with various analogue techniques, post-colouring methods and alternative and installative presentation possibilities. She often combines other media such as painting and sculpture with her photographs in order to remove their reference to reality and instead place them in their own imaginary cosmos and context.
